I have been interested in illustrated books for children since I was an art student in Japan. Throughout my life, I have collected many illustrated books. I also joined a volunteer group, “NY Japanese Children’s Cultural Society” for several years when I was living in the suburbs of NY. This group encourages children, who live around NYC, to appreciate Japanese culture through children’s books, puppet shows, etc.
In the summer of 2019, I worked with other volunteers to create puppets of the characters from the fairytale story of Grimm’s “Town Musician of Bremen”, which was scheduled to be performed in a puppet show in the fall of that year. The materials used for the puppets (Donkey, Dog, Cat and a Rooster) were colorful Uniqlo men’s socks.
It was a magical project for me - transforming socks into stuffed animals.
Since then, I’ve continued creating characters from other children’s stories such as, “Gogo”, “One-eyed Jack”, “Gouche the Cellist”, “And Tango Makes Three”, “The Grateful Crane”, “The Three Billy Goats Gruff”, and “Three Little Pigs” as well as holiday animal characters - Thanksgiving turkey, Easter bunny, Halloween cat, Christmas reindeer, and more…

画学生だった頃から、絵本が大好きで、沢山の絵本を集めています。ニューヨーク郊外に住んでいた頃、数年間、NY児童文化の会でボランティア活動に参加しました。このグループは、絵本の読み聞かせや人形劇などを通して、ニューヨーク近郊に住んでいる子供達に日本の文化を楽しく継承させる活動をしています。
２０１９年の夏、秋に公開予定されている「ブレーメンの音楽隊」の人形劇の制作に他のボランティアメンバーと二人で取り掛かりました。人形劇に登場する動物達の素材を探し求めていた時に、ユニクロの紳士用靴下売り場で、カラフルなソックスに出会いました。色とりどりの伸縮性に富む素材は人形制作にぴったりで、ロバ・犬・ねこ・にわとりをユニクロの靴下で作りました。そしてソックスアートと名付け、これが、ソックスアートの根源となりました。
動物達の制作はとても楽しく、その後も引き続き、私自身のプロジェクトとして、ソックスアートの制作を続けています。「ゴゴ」「片目のジャック」「セロ弾きのゴーシュ」「タンタンタンゴはパパふたり」「三匹のヤギのガラガラドン」「鶴のおんがえし」「三匹のこぶた」等の絵本に登場する動物達に加え、祝祭日に関わる動物達など、沢山の動物達が仲間入りしています。
これらの動物達のイメージやアニメーションビデオを、ソックスアート動物園として、ここに紹介致します。ビデオ版のソックスアート動物園では、MIZU (Issei Herr)の作曲・チェロ伴奏の音楽も楽しめます。
